The image was the first prize winner in the Amateur category of the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest. In August 1976, the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Committee (OARBAC) began the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest as part of a larger effort in Ohio to celebrate the 1976 American Bicentennial. The contest was meant to document "the spirit and character of the people and places which represent Ohio during [the] bicentennial year," and to create a permanent photographic archive of the year's festivity for use by future researchers. Description: Canal plat map showing a section of the route of the Ohio and Erie Canal through the city of Barberton in Summit County, between stations 306 and 414. The Tuscarawas River and properties in the Barberton area are seen, and bridges, railroads, stations, locks, and other landmarks along the route are also noted. The map was created under the direction of the members of the Canal Commission of the state of Ohio and approved by the Chief Engineer of the Department of Public Works (variously referred to as the Board of Public Works and the Division of Public Works). The Ohio and Erie Canal was constructed between 1825 and 1832, eventually connecting Cleveland and Lake Erie with Portsmouth and the Ohio River. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph showing a waste-way in disrepair. The caption beneath the photograph reads: "Bad Waste-Way at Barberton, Ohio, To be replaced by concrete. Aug. 1916." The attached description located on the side of the photograph reads: "PHOTOGRAPH No. 64.| BARBERTON WASTE WAY.| The waste way at Barberton is leaking badly. Timber is in a state of decay. Should be replaced by concrete curtain wall." This photograph is part of a series taken by the Board of the Ohio Department of Public Works to document the disrepair of the infrastructure of the Ohio and Erie Canal and Miami-Erie Canal systems in 1916, showing the physical condition of each structure. The Ohio Department of Public Works is one of the oldest departments of state government in continuous existence. Among its other duties, this department was charged with maintenance and administration of the Ohio & Erie and Miami-Erie Canals. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The Ohio-Erie Canal that ran through Tuscarawas County began at Summit Lake near Barberton and ended at Dresden. The canal was a was for farmers and manufacturers to connect to the Ohio River and Lake Erie. It operated from 1825 until the disastrous flood in 1913. It became obsolete due to the railroads.
